San Diego wants the America’s Cup again.

This week the city released a video aimed at winning that honor for the 2017 Americas Cup.  San Diego is in a battle with Bermuda for the nod.  As much as I want the race to be closer (and more affordable), I will be sad if Bermuda doesn’t get it.  Who wouldn’t want to visit an island where grown men wear shorts with their suits.

Wherever the race ends up, it will be hard to beat last year’s epic AC34 competition in San Francisco.  With its large bay and strong winds, SF is ideal.

Many in the sailing press and blogosphere are complaining about the venue change from SF.  The usable waterfront and winds are just not as good in SD.

San Diego is a wonderful place, but simply doesn’t have the challenging winds for a proper America’s Cup. It would be like holding the Masters Golf Tournament at a dried-out muni course.  (www.latitude38.com, Richard Spindler)

Either way, I can’t wait for the racing to heat up again.
